Google 'knew camera car software could capture online data'

In a recent correspondence handed over to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), US authorities investigating Google’s contentious Street View service have revealed that the Internet search giant was aware of the fact that users’ online data could be captured by its ‘camera car software.’

Cisco announced slow death of its Cius tablet

Cisco Systems has confirmed that it decision to make no further investment in the Cisco Cius tablet, a move that will pave way for the slow killing of the business-focused tablet.

The networking giant’s decision came less than two years after the launch of the Android-based tablet.

Confirming the decision, Senior Vice President OJ Winge wrote in the company’s official blog, “Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today.”

Android, iOS Crush BlackBerry Market Share

According to the most recent ‘smartphone OS market share’ figures brought forth by research firm IDC, Google’s increasingly popular Android operating system and the Apple iOS have virtually crushed the market share of Research In Motion (RIM)’s BlackBerry platform.

Going by the latest smartphone OS figures revealed by IDC, the Android and the iOS now hold a mammoth 81 percent of the worldwide smartphone market; with no other OS having more than a 7 percent share.

Apple design chief Jonathan Ive is knighted

Among the prominent figures knighted by Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday is Apple’s well-known design chief, Jonathan Ive --- the British designer who has designed many popular Apple devices, including iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Sir Jonathan – who was born in Chingford, east London, and graduated from Newcastle Polytechnic – was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the New Year Honours list for services to design and enterprise.

Dog bite causes rabies in grandmother

According to the Health Protection Agency, a case of rabies has come to light in the UK.

A patient from London has been bitten by an infected dog in South Asia and the potentially fatal disease was confirmed.

The patient is a grandmother and her age was reported to be in 50s.

The HPA has said that hospital treatment is being given to the lady and all relevant contacts had been followed up and public was told not to panic as there is no risk.

Stronger pain relief for terminally-stage patients

According to a report, strong enough pain relief is not being given to many patients who have advanced cancer and other debilitating conditions.

The reason is that many doctors are not confident enough to prescribe strong opioids, such as morphine, partly as a result of patients’ concerns over addiction.

And another reason is that giving opioids might make people think that they are nearing the end of their life as opioids are given only at the final stages of a terminal disease.

Apple, Samsung in talks to reach out-of-court settlement on patent lawsuits

In an attempt to reach an out-of-court settlement on the several patent lawsuits which Apple and Samsung have filed against each other, the Apple CEO Tim Cook and the Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung - along with their general counsels - began their two-day court directed discussions on Monday.

The talks between the two CEOs - who were summoned and directed for the discussions by federal court judge Lucy Koh last month - are being mediated by a magistrate judge.

China approves Google’s bid for Motorola

China has asked Google to fulfill a big condition to get approval for its $12.5 billion bid to acquire handset manufacturer Motorola Mobility.

Chinese authorities have confirmed that Google will have to continue to offer its Android operating system for mobile devices at no cost for five years following the acquisition.

In case the internet search giant agrees to the condition, it will become very close to sealing its largest acquisition deal ever.

A spokesperson for Google confirmed that Chinese authorities approved the deal on Saturday, with a big condition.

Motorola Mobility smartphones face US import ban

A Friday verdict by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) went Microsoft's way, with the commission - ruling in the Microsoft-Motorola patent-infringement lawsuit - banning the import of Android-based Motorola Mobility handsets in the country. The ITC verdict upholds a December last year decision by Administrative Law Judge Theodore Essex.
