Alcohol abuse should be checked by dentists

Researchers have stated that dentists should check people for alcohol consumption when they come for treatment.

Dentists should give them a questionnaire before treating them as this will help them know their alcohol consumption.

It is a duty of doctors to spread awareness about the general well being of people and look out for signs that is affecting the health of people and alcohol consumption is one of them.

Researchers said, “Alcohol misuse can impact on the oral health of patients attending primary care services in numerous ways. Excessive alcohol consumption is not only a risk factor for sustaining orofacial injury but also implicated in the aetiology of potentially fatal oral disease, including cancers of the mouth, larynx, pharynx and oesophagus.”

They further said that tooth surface gets eroded with too much alcohol along with tooth decay. Cavities can start taking place as alcoholic drinks contain high sugar.

Experts from University of Cardiff added that once known that someone is consuming too much alcohol, treatment can be offered, not only dental but other kinds also like motivating them to leave drinking and consulting them on a regular basis.
