Pomegranate juice could help kidney patients

Israeli researchers have found that pomegranate can help in reducing infections among kidney patients.

The polyphenol antioxidants found in the juice helps in protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Study lead researcher Dr. Batya Kristal said that pomegranate has the highest level of antioxidants, which is also higher than red wine.

Due to circulation of blood in dialysis device, the concentration of free radicals in blood goes up and results in increased inflammation in tissues.

For the study, researchers tracked 101 patients, who were randomly assigned to drink pomegranate juice.

The results showed that those who drank half cup of pomegranate juice three times a week for a year had reduced inflammatory molecules in their blood.

As a result, the chances of visiting hospitals get reduced by 40 percent, and the chances of second hospitalization came down by 80 percent.

No adverse events were found to be linked with the juice, but kidney patients must be aware of the potassium levels present in the juice.

Dr. Kristal said that more clinical trials are needed to prove the benefits of pomegranate for kidney patients.
